Why Contrived Narratives Undermine Great Storytelling

Contrived narratives often rely on forced plot twists, overly simplistic character arcs, or predetermined outcomes that ignore character motivations and development. This can lead to a disconnect between the audience and the story, as the emotional stakes feel artificial. Great storytelling isn’t just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about creating a journey that feels authentic, with characters making choices that are true to who they are.

One clear example of this is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film’s plot often feels like it’s forcing its characters into situations simply to advance the narrative, without much regard for their personal growth or the journey they’ve taken in previous films. Rey, for instance, is presented as the chosen one, but her arc often lacks the struggles or challenges that would make her growth feel earned. Instead, she’s given abilities and information seemingly out of nowhere, which weakens the emotional payoff of her story.

In contrast, The Dark Knight delivers a compelling narrative because every character’s actions are motivated by their desires, flaws, and personal growth. There are no shortcuts or easy resolutions. The story’s conflict arises naturally from the characters’ decisions and arcs, allowing audiences to become deeply invested.

A well-crafted narrative ensures that every choice a character makes is driven by their development, rather than by plot devices. This authenticity is what makes great storytelling resonate with audiences.
