Why Authentic Empowerment Beats Contrived Heroics

Authentic empowerment in storytelling resonates with audiences because it feels earned, grounded in character development, and rooted in real struggles. When a hero overcomes challenges through their own growth, their victory is satisfying and believable. On the other hand, contrived heroics—where a character is simply handed power or success without a meaningful arc—often fall flat because they lack emotional weight and relatability.

Take Wonder Woman for example. Her empowerment comes not just from her superhuman strength, but from her inner resolve, her compassion, and her deep desire to protect humanity. Her journey is one of learning, adjusting her worldview, and making difficult choices. This authenticity makes her a relatable and inspirational figure, not just because she’s powerful, but because her strength stems from personal growth and purpose.

Contrasted with characters who seem to instantly rise to the occasion without struggle—like Captain Marvel at times—the audience may feel distanced, as there’s little emotional investment in their triumphs. Empowerment should feel like a result of a character’s journey, not a given from the start. Authentic empowerment engages audiences by demonstrating that overcoming adversity and personal limitations is what makes a character truly heroic.
