Gal Gadot’s portrayal of the Evil Queen in Disney’s Snow White remake was one of the most highly anticipated performances, but it ultimately fell flat for many viewers. One of the key issues lies in the portrayal of the character’s motivations and depth. Traditionally, the Evil Queen is a complex figure driven by jealousy, vanity, and a deep-seated fear of aging. However, in this remake, the character was reduced to a one-dimensional villain with a vague backstory and overly simplistic motivations. Gadot’s typically strong screen presence failed to bring the necessary nuance to a character who should have been a force of compelling, multifaceted evil. The Queen’s actions felt more like plot devices than emotional decisions made by a powerful, disturbed woman. Part of the problem was the script’s failure to explore the Queen’s psyche in a meaningful way. Her jealousy and obsession with beauty, while understandable, weren’t made relatable or emotionally charged enough to make the audience truly fear her or sympathize with her struggles. Instead of a terrifying antagonist, the Evil Queen came across as more of a caricature, lacking the layers that make villains like Maleficent or Scar so memorable. The key to portraying a great villain is depth, and unfortunately, Gadot’s performance couldn’t elevate this character to anything more than a mere obstacle for Snow White to overcome.
