The Dark Path of Road to Perdition: Exploring Redemption and Loss

In Road to Perdition, Michael Sullivan, a hitman during the Great Depression, embarks on a dangerous journey of revenge after his wife and son are brutally murdered. With his son, Michael Jr., by his side, Sullivan seeks justice while grappling with the consequences of his violent life.

One fan theory suggests that Sullivan’s quest for vengeance is actually a search for redemption, trying to atone for his past crimes through the protection of his son. What if Sullivan had chosen a different path—one where he left the world of crime altogether and sought a quieter life with his son?

A key moment in the film occurs when Michael Sullivan kills his mentor, John Rooney, realizing that his quest for vengeance has come full circle and that his son’s future is at stake. This pivotal moment shifts the course of Sullivan’s life and marks his final attempt to protect his son from the violent world he’s part of.

In an alternate ending, Sullivan could have decided to go into hiding with Michael Jr., leaving behind the violent past for good. A prequel could explore Sullivan’s early years as a hitman and the events that shaped his life of crime.
