Why Hollywood Needs a New Approach to Strong Female Characters

Hollywood’s current approach to strong female characters often falls into the trap of portraying them as either perfect, overpowered figures or simply as “tokens” to fulfill diversity quotas. While these portrayals may be empowering on the surface, they often lack depth and fail to resonate with audiences in a meaningful way. To create truly compelling female characters, Hollywood must shift its focus to depth, vulnerability, and realistic growth.

The typical “strong female lead” in Hollywood often prioritizes physical power or independence above all else, making the character feel more like a stereotype than a well-rounded person. These characters may have moments of emotional depth or struggle, but their arcs often lack the complexity needed to make them feel truly human. Instead, what audiences crave are female characters who are strong not just in terms of their actions, but in terms of their emotional resilience, complexity, and moral growth.

Take Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul, for instance—she is a woman of incredible intelligence and determination, but her emotional vulnerability and moral dilemmas create a rich, multi-layered character. Hollywood needs more characters like Kim—women who are not defined solely by their strength or toughness but by their personal evolution.

A new approach to female characters should focus on creating women with flaws, vulnerabilities, and emotional growth, ensuring they are as complex and compelling as any male character. Only then can Hollywood create truly powerful female protagonists who resonate with modern audiences.
